Not to rub salt in an open wound, but did you not backup your machine regularly?

A couple of years ago the conductor of my orchestra left his laptop in a restaurant then drove 5 hours before realizing he didn’t have it. They tracked it down to an employee who took it and had already started over-writing the drive with porn or something. He lost absolutely everything. Years of documents, large orchestral arrangements , email, everything. And he had never once backed up the machine.

Glad you got your stuff back. That can be an incredibly sinking and helpless feeling. But when I was working in a computer lab in college, we had a saying. There are two kinds of computer users: those who have lost data, and those who will lose data.

All I do is pay bills and browse Craigslist. The photos were what was important. Because sometimes I need to look back to remember where I am.

... Uh, Celica

Cloud storage. Sure the NSA and Chinese are reading my documents. But it's so damn easy

Which is why I save all my photos to a mirrored drive that I routinely back up again to another drive.

Happy to help. Sorry to mislead you a bit by leaving off a step (the danger of giving instructions without actually testing them myself first ).

It’s pretty easy to backup those photos to Microsoft/Google/Amazon, and it’s a good thing to do.

Please, you had the patience of a saint. I am painfully un-tech-savvy.

Patience is one of my few positive features, it’s nice to be able to put it to good use.

If you have Amazon Prime, you can back up all your photos to Amazon Photos. If you use Google, you can back up all your photos to Google Photos. If you have....

I had troubles with the Google cloud... Like, it would only let me view *some* of the photos I put on it, and some of my albums were inaccessible. I was unable to find anyone with similar issues at the time — probably because I didn’t know what I was doing. But in any case...

Oh man. I could use some lessons in patience. I think my kids have been trying to teach me, but so far the results have been mixed. :P

Keeping photos in two places is advisable. As Tyymmmnnnn pointed out, an external drive is cheap backup insurance. Amazon and Apple and Google and Microsoft would all like to host your photos, but it’s a good idea to make sure they aren’t compressing the photos too much for your liking.

I don’t have any kids, so I don’t know if my talents are up to that challenge. I’d like to think so, but I’ve seen people tested.
